A rooftop garden in Mont Kiara

An empty, sun-baked penthouse roof turned into a green outdoor living room, with lightweight planters, a shade pergola and lighting for warm evenings.

Rooftop gardens in KL bring their own challenges: weight, wind, waterproofing and, above all, the midday sun. We started with a structural load check and a waterproofing inspection, then designed everything around what the roof could safely carry.

Lightweight planters hold palms, grasses and heat-tolerant shrubs, all watered by a hidden drip irrigation system on a timer. A timber pergola shades the lounge area and carries a scheme of warm, low lighting, turning the roof into an outdoor living room for the cool evenings.

“They turned an empty, too-hot-to-use roof into a garden. We have friends over every weekend now.”
